The coronavirus outbreak has triggered unprecedented mass layoffs and furloughs. Major companies announced they are downsizing their workforces. In 23 weeks, more than 58 million Americans have filed for unemployment insurance — that’s more than the number of claims filed during the Great Recession. Additionally, a study by the Economic Policy Institute on August 28, 2020, estimates that 12 million Americans have lost their employer-based health insurance since February.
